Lexical analysis: The creation of additional lookup files, such as lexicons, the- sauri, gazetteers (lexicons that associate geographic coordinates to locations), and other systematically defined auxiliary collections of entities is called lexi- cal analysis.
Lexical analysis is used for a variety of purposes, including but not limited to named entity recognition and extraction (NER), categorization (part of what is called similarity analysis, discussed below), disambiguation, and various mapping and cartographic applications.
The good news is that lexical analysis continues to improve in both effectiveness and efficiency.
An important application of lexical analysis is with social, political, or economic event data, a field where machine coding has marked significant progress and is now considered equal to or more accurate than human manual coding.
